TOV Research: Special Report

Manhattan Community Board 8 June 23, 2011 Public Forum on Elder Abuse

PROTECTING THE ELDERLY FROM FINANCIAL CRIMES

After a peformance to scare seniors to protect themselves with the appointment of a guardian, the Manhattan Asistant District Attorney's Community Affairs Unit distributed materials directing seniors to seek the help from some of the most despicable guardians. Cries from the audiance proclaimed that Loewy had ignored serious abuse cases. Several attending questioned if Ms. Loewy was protecting the worse offenders and deriving some benefit from doing so. In response to questions from the audiance, Elizabeth "Liz" Loewy Manhattan ADA for Elder Abuse, stated that, "I do not investigate guardians."

The message was rejected by the audiance. Guardian abuse is surging by groups such as Self-Help and the Jewish Assication for Services for the Aged, "JASA." both based in Manhattan. Lowey was provided with evidence of a near fatal incident involving Cecile Hershkovitz JASA Guardian Program Director. Now several weeks after the meeting Loewy has failed to followed up on the incident. ADA Loewy never contacted TOV Research or the victim.

The forum was sponsed by Council member Jessica Lappin and the presentation made by ADA Liz Loewy. Also attending from the District Attorney's Office was Linda Jones-Janneh.
